Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
